Andean Spirituality – The Andean Codes

3 min read·Illaripa Lupa Hake

The first time I heard the word Munay, it was not explained to me. My teacher in the Andes spoke it, looked at me, and said nothing more. In that moment I understood nothing. But I felt something — and that was the beginning.

As a keeper of Andean energy medicine, I meet people today who ask about the Andean codes. They want to know what they mean. My first answer is always the same: these codes cannot be understood in the mind. They work through experience.

Wisdom That Comes from the Stars In the tradition I teach from, the Andean codes are considered ancient knowledge whose origin lies beyond the human. They carry a higher consciousness and serve as cosmic guidance for daily life. They do not operate within political or scientific systems. They operate before them — at a level that makes those systems possible in the first place.

Munay and Kawsay — The Foundational Codes Two codes stand at the center of the practice I pass on. Munay — unconditional love, not as a feeling but as a force that orders and nourishes. Kawsay — life energy itself, the breath that flows through everything alive. These words remain in Quechua.

A translation would lose their depth. The language of the Andes carries the vibration with it, and it is exactly that vibration that does the real work. Codes Work in Daily Life, Not in Study The Andean path does not emphasize the intellectual accumulation of knowledge. It emphasizes living.

A single code, truly integrated, can transform an entire life — the perspective, the relationships, the energy with which one meets the day. My teachers in the Andes embody these codes. They do not pass them on as technique, but as lived experience. That is the decisive difference from many modern methods.

For the Heart and Consciousness, Not the Analytical Mind The Andean codes do not address the analytical mind. They speak to consciousness and to the heart. Those who work with them learn to think less and to feel more. The codes are active now.

They are accessible to those who feel called to live with them. A Quiet Invitation If these words touch you, perhaps that is not a coincidence. In the training in Andean energy medicine, participants learn to enter into relationship with these codes — not as subject matter, but as living companions through everyday life. You do not need many codes.

You only need the first one that truly reaches you.
