What Is a Paqo? The Healers of the Andes

3 min read·Illaripa Lupa Hake

I grew up in Bolivian and Peruvian traditions, in the high Andes. Even as a child I knew people who walk between worlds — who perceive what others cannot see. In my culture they are called Paqos. As a keeper of Andean energy medicine, I want to show you what this role truly means — beyond clichés and romanticization.

What "Paqo" Means The term comes from Quechua and can be translated as "energy healer" or "spiritual practitioner." A Paqo perceives Kawsay Pacha — the cosmos of living energy — and works consciously with it. The tradition distinguishes between two levels. Pampa Mesayoq works with the forces of the earth and nature. Alto Mesayoq communicates with the Apus (mountain spirits) and with higher beings.

A Paqo does not only learn techniques. He learns to directly feel the living energy of the cosmos — and to accompany people within it. Paqo and Shaman — the Difference Shamanism has its origins in Siberia and encompasses a wide variety of practices around the world. Paqo work, by contrast, is specifically rooted in Andean cosmology.

Rather than using trance states or plant medicines as central tools, Paqos focus on the direct perception and transformation of Kawsay. They work with principles such as Ayni — reciprocal exchange — and Hucha Mikhuy — the art of digesting heavy energy. How One Becomes a Paqo The paths to the Paqo calling are many. Some receive their calling through a lightning strike or a serious illness.

Others inherit the knowledge through family lineages. Still others are chosen by experienced practitioners. The training encompasses the cleansing of one's own energy field, the development of sensitivity to Hucha, learning ceremonies such as the Despacho — and deep personal healing work. Because one can only accompany others as far as one has gone oneself.

Paqo Practice Today Contemporary Paqos share the traditional principles and adapt them to global contexts. Living energy is universal. Energetic blockages and emotional burdens affect people worldwide, regardless of origin or language. I do not see myself as someone who stands above people.

I am a fellow traveler who has learned to accompany others through his own healing experiences. Every person carries within them the potential to restore their connection to the living energy. An Invitation If this world calls to you, you can make a first contact with this tradition in an individual session. Those who wish to walk the longer path will find it in the nine-month training in Andean energy medicine.

It is not an elitist path. But it is a serious one.
